Since HIV/AIDS makes no distinction of geographical areas or between the different classes that reside there,  the dreaded virus spread its tentacles to the Union Territory of Chandigarh too. In order to create awareness so as to contain it and to provide help and support to those who had become victims of it, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, took the initiative of forming State AIDS Control Societies (SACS) in all the states under National AIDS Control Organisation, New Delhi. Consequently, State AIDS Control Society (SACS), UT, Chandigarh, came into being in 1998.

The society has ever since been engaged in creating awareness among masses, warning them about the intensity of the disease and educating them to adopt  preventive measures before it is too late. The young and the old, the poor and the rich and the white collared and the working classes, all have been the target of the message of SACS, UT, Chandigarh. With the active support of the Administration of the Union Territory of Chandigarh and its Health Department, the dedicated team of SACS, UT, Chandigarh, the awareness campaign has reached every nook and corner and every segment of Chandigarh and its society.  SACS Chandigarh has undertaken various programmes to control and spread awareness about AIDS in the region.
