With the spread of HIV/AIDS across the nation, the city beautiful could not be spared from the clutches of this dreadful virus.  To fight against the fatal disease, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MIHFW), Government of India, took the initiative of forming State AIDS Control Societies (SACS) in all the states under National AIDS Control Organisation, New Delhi.  As a result of this step, SACS, Chandigarh came into being in 1998. The society is engaged in creating awareness among masses about the intensity of disease and its preventive measures. Be it young, the old , the poor, the rich, care is taken that awareness messages reach all the citizens.  The society operates through Non Government Organisations, C.B.O.s, Volunteers Prevention from Parent to Child Transmission Centres (PPTCT), Integrated Counseling & Testing Centres (ICTCs), Community Care Centre (CCC), Anti Retroviral Treatment Centre (ART), Drop-in-Centre, STI Clinics and Blood Banks. A mobile IEC/ICTC van also runs through the city spreading the message ‘Know AIDS for No AIDS’. SACS, Chandigarh has undertaken various programmes to control and spread awareness about AIDS in the region as mentioned below:
