Community mobilization and encouragement for the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) of most at risk population by partner NGOs under the aegis of State AIDS Control Society, UT, Chandigarh

Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society (SACS) organized a programme for community mobilization and encouragement to the partner NGOs and members for the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) of most at risk population. Programme was organized on March 17, 2008 at Lion’s Club Greater Building, Opposite Government High School, Ramdarbar, Phase – I, Chandigarh.

Mrs. Jean Rodrigues, wife of Governor Punjab and Administrator was the chief guest on this occasion. Among other dignitaries who were present includes Dr. M. S. Bains, Director, Health Services, Chandigarh, Dr. Vanita Gupta, Project Director, State AIDS Control Society, UT, Chandigarh and Ms. M. K. Sawhney, Divisional Manager (P&GS), Life Insurance Corporation of India. Chief functionaries of various partner NGOs, Project Managers of TI projects, staff of State AIDS Control Society, members of Lion’s Club and community member of most at risk population attended the programme. About 65 members of SHGs were present during the programme.

An exhibition was setup. Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society is providing grant-in-aid to partner NGOs for implementation of eleven Targeted Intervention projects among core group population of female sex workers, men having sex with men and injecting drug users for prevention of transmission of HIV and RTI/STIs in various parts of Chandigarh. All slums, villages and hotspots in urban areas are being covered by partner NGOs. Staff of TI projects was instrumental in putting up the exhibition. A display was also put up to depict various services being provided by Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society. Chief Guest took keen interest in the services being provided by Chandigarh State AIDS Control society in partnership with NGOs. She interacted with Project Managers, NGO functionaries and SACS officials during the appraisal of exhibits.

After review of the exhibition Chief Guest interacted with the members of Self Help Groups (SHGs). There were four counters setup by different SHGs. Mrs. Jean Rodrigues visited each counter and interacted with the members. She keenly observed the articles made by the members of SHG and extended all possible support for the proliferation of the activities of self help groups.
